Volunteering at the Local Library: My Experience

Last summer, I had the opportunity to participate in a volunteer activity at our local library. The program took place over two weeks in July, organized by the city community center. I joined a group of ten volunteers, mostly students from our high school, and our task was to help the library staff organize books, assist visitors, and run a small reading program for children.

On the first day, we gathered for an orientation. The librarian explained our responsibilities and gave us some guidelines. My main task was to help shelve books in their correct categories and assist children in finding their favorite stories. Initially, I felt nervous because I was not familiar with the library system and worried about making mistakes. However, with guidance from the librarian and support from my fellow volunteers, I quickly learned the system and even developed a method to arrange books efficiently.

During the reading sessions for children, I discovered both challenges and joys. Some children were very shy and hesitant to participate, which made it difficult to engage them. I tried different approaches, such as asking simple questions and encouraging them to share their thoughts. Gradually, more children joined in, and I realized how patience and positive reinforcement could make a big difference.

Through this experience, I learned valuable lessons in teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. I also noticed improvements in my English expression. Explaining the stories to children required clear and simple language, which strengthened my vocabulary and ability to organize sentences logically. Additionally, helping visitors with book recommendations pushed me to think critically and express ideas more fluently in English.

Overall, this volunteer activity was not only an opportunity to serve my community but also a personal journey of growth. I learned the importance of empathy, responsibility, and effective communication. Most importantly, it inspired me to continue participating in volunteer activities, knowing that every small effort can positively impact others while enriching my own skills and confidence.

Cleaning the Community Park: A Lesson in Teamwork

Last autumn, I joined a volunteer activity aimed at cleaning our community park. The event was organized by the neighborhood committee and took place on a sunny Saturday morning. Around twenty volunteers, including students and local residents, participated. Our main tasks were collecting trash, planting flowers, and maintaining walking paths.

At the beginning, I felt the work was simple, but I soon realized it required more effort than expected. Some areas were heavily littered, and it took time and patience to clean them thoroughly. I worked with a small team responsible for removing debris and arranging new flower beds. Communication was essential, as we had to coordinate where to place plants and how to manage the tools effectively.

One challenge I faced was dealing with heavy bags of trash. It required both physical effort and strategic planning. I learned to divide the tasks based on each volunteer's strengths, which made the work more efficient. Another challenge was explaining the planting instructions to a few younger volunteers who were less familiar with gardening. Here, my English skills came into play. I had to simplify explanations, use clear gestures, and make sure everyone understood their responsibilities. It was a real test of patience and clear communication.

By the end of the day, the park looked much cleaner and more inviting. I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. More importantly, I gained practical experience in teamwork and leadership. Explaining tasks in English, coordinating with team members, and solving unexpected problems all contributed to my personal growth and improved my ability to communicate effectively in English.

This volunteer activity taught me that serving the community is not just about physical work, but also about collaboration and empathy. It showed me how small actions, when done collectively, can make a meaningful difference. It also reinforced my confidence in using English in real-life situations, which will benefit my academic and personal development in the future.
