ISO Foreword
ISO (International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide alliance of national standard organizations (ISO member bodies). The formulation of international standards is generally completed through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a project established by a technical committee has the right to express its opinions in the technical committee. Any official or unofficial international organization that has a liaison relationship with ISO can directly participate in the formulation of ISO international standards. ISO and IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) work closely in all areas of electrotechnical standards. The draft international standard formally adopted by the technical committee must be sent to each member body for voting before being accepted as an international standard by the ISO Council. According to ISO's working procedures, the draft standard becomes an ISO international standard only after it is approved by at least 75% of the member bodies.
International Standard ISO 4217 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 68 on Banking and Related Financial Services. This fifth edition, with only minor revisions, cancels and replaces the fourth edition (ISO 4217: 1990). Annex A forms an integral part of this standard.

Replaces GB12406—90
With the significant increase in international information exchange, the need for universal codes for the identification of currencies and funds has become increasingly urgent. At the time of publication of this standard, there are no currency codes in cross-industry use worldwide. It is foreseeable that industries without existing currency codes will wish to adopt this standard as soon as possible, while industries using existing currency codes may find it advantageous to adopt this standard in place of their industry standards.
This standard has considered the issue of individual codes, registration and their use, and includes basic principles for these functions. 1 Scope
This standard provides a three-letter code structure and a corresponding three-digit code structure for representing currencies and funds. For currencies with auxiliary units, the decimal relationship between the auxiliary units and the national currency is also given. This standard also establishes the procedures for the maintenance agency and specifies the method of applying for codes. This standard is applicable to all areas of trade, commerce and banking where the description of currency and funds is required. It is applicable not only to manual processing but also to automated processing systems. 2 Referenced standards
The provisions contained in the following standards constitute the provisions of this standard through reference in this standard. At the time of publication of this standard, the versions shown are valid. All standards are subject to revision and parties using this standard should investigate the possibility of using the latest version of the following standards. GB/T2659--94 Codes for the names of countries and regions of the world 3 Definitions
This standard uses the following definitions:
3.1 Currency
The medium of exchange of value, determined by the geographical location of the institution responsible for managing it. 3.2 Funds
The monetary resources associated with a currency.
3.3 Minor unit of currency The unit of recording value (i.e. as a bank record) that is part of the monetary unit. For example, a cent is one hundredth of a dollar and a penny is one hundredth of a pound. Note: Some currencies have minor units, which are coins of low value used within a country or region, but which are not used as an official record of value in the domestic or international banking system. Countries with such coins include Belgium, Greece, Iceland and Spain. 3.4 Redenomination
The change in the value of a monetary unit.
Approved by the State Administration of Technical Supervision on December 26, 1996 and implemented on July 1, 1997
4 Principles of Code Collection
GB/T 12406-1996
4.1 The codes given in Table A1, Table A2 and Table A3 of this standard represent the currencies and funds used by the entities described in GB/T 2659.
4.2 The code tables listed are intended to reflect the current situation at the time of publication. 5 Code Structure
The letter type and the corresponding numeric type code structure are as follows: 5.1 Letter type code (see Table A1, Table A2 and Table A3) 5.1.1 The leftmost two characters of the currency code in this standard provide a unique code assigned to the monetary management agency. The geographical area of the monetary management agency is derived from GB/T 2659.
Note: When used for non-banking business and no fund code is required, the leftmost two characters of this standard are sufficient to identify a currency. 5.1.2 The third character of the alphanumeric code (the first character from the right) is an indicator, also called a mnemonic, based on the name of the main currency unit or fund.
5.1.3 When a currency is not associated with a single geographical entity as described in GB/T 2659, a specially assigned two-letter code is used to indicate the monetary authority. This code is assigned by the maintaining agency from the user-assigned field XA to XZ of the code. The character after X is a mnemonic, if possible, based on the name of the geographical area involved. For example: XP refers to the area using the CFP franc. 5.2 Numerical Codes (See Tables A1, A2 and A3) Numerical currency codes may be derived from the United Nations standard country or area codes, if possible. Additional codes for funds to meet special requirements (as described in Section 5.1.3) may be assigned as needed from the user-assigned field 950 to 998. Fund codes are determined in descending order starting from 998.
6 Supplementary units of currency
It is sometimes necessary to express the value of a currency in terms of its supplementary units. When this occurs, it is necessary to know the decimal relationship between the currencies involved and their supplementary units. This information has therefore been included in this standard and is shown in the supplementary unit column of Tables A1, A2 and A3; "0" indicates that the currency has no supplementary unit; while "1", "2" and "3" indicate a ratio of 101, 100:1 and 10001 respectively. The names of the supplementary units are not given in this standard.
7 Currency reform
When a currency reform occurs, the maintenance agency will assign an alphabetic code to the currency after the reform to distinguish it from the par value of the original currency. The codes for the original par value currencies that have now been replaced by the new codes are shown in Table A3.8 Maintenance
Maintenance agencies established by the ISO Council work according to procedures approved by the Council. These procedures are contained in Annex A to this standard.
