Korean geographical names
Korean geographical names
Korean geographical entity names composed of three categories: indigenous words, Chinese words, and loan words. 3 General Principles
3.1 Place names should be transliterated
3.2 Place names should be translated literally.
3.3 Place names with traditional and customary Chinese characters and those named after common names should still be used, and their derived place names should be translated the same way. 3.4 Place names should be translated using the standard place names in the latest official maps, place name directories, place name dictionaries, gazetteers, and other documents published by North Korea and South Korea
3.5 See Appendix A for the commonly used Chinese characters for translating Korean place names. 4 Rules
4.1 Place names
4.1.1 Chinese characters should follow the following principles:
a) Chinese characters in Korean place names should be restored to their corresponding Chinese characters by searching for materials. For some literature materials that can be searched, please refer to Appendix B;
b) Place names that cannot be found in existing materials should be translated by referring to Appendix A. The corresponding Chinese characters should be semantically matched, and derogatory and ambiguous characters should be avoided. If there is no semantic match, the first character in Appendix A should be preferred. 4.1.2
Place names with foreign words should be transliterated.
Place names with native words should be translated in a literal sense. If their meaning cannot be determined, they can be transliterated. Please refer to Appendix A for the characters. Place names composed of native words and Chinese characters should be translated in the same way as native words and Chinese characters. Adjectives that modify place names should be translated in a literal sense. The translation of common place names is shown in Appendix C. For place names named after people, historical figures, posthumous titles, and monarchical titles, please refer to Appendix D for the corresponding Chinese characters. 4.1.6
Numbers and dates in place names should be translated in a literal sense.
Place names with historical significance should be translated in a literal sense. For some literature materials that can be found, please refer to Appendix B. 4.1.8
When some place names in place names are both Chinese characters and native words, Chinese characters should be used first. 4.1.10
Examples of Chinese character translation of some place names and proper nouns are shown in Table 1. 2
