GB/T 16472—1996
This standard specifies the digital codes for the types of cargo, packags and packaging materials used in trade, transportation and other economic activities related to international trade. It also specifies the letter codes for the types of packaging. This standard applies to data exchange between participants engaged in international trade using automatic exchange methods and data exchange between participants of other applications, and also applies to manual systems. 2 Referenced standards

GB/T15191-94 Trade Data Exchange Trade Data Meta Catalog GB/T15233-94 Package Unit Cargo Dimensions 3 Definitions
This standard adopts the following definitions.
3.1 Cargo cargo
Cargo transported by ships or other means of transport. Note: Cargo can be liquid, solid materials or substances without any packaging (e.g. bulk cargo), or unpackaged bulk cargo, packaged cargo, grouped cargo (cargo loaded on pallets or in containers) or cargo loaded on transport equipment and carried by powered transport. 3.2 Cargo type cargo type
The classification of cargo carried or to be carried on a transport according to its general appearance. 3.3 Packaged cargo package
Complete cargo that has been packaged for transportation, including packaging (containers, own containers) and the goods contained therein. Note: Packaged cargo includes all items used for packaging, especially the brackets used to fix the inner and outer covers of the cargo, the brackets and containers for rolling and attaching the cargo. The term does not include transport vehicles and transport equipment, such as pallets and freight containers. 3.4 Packaging materials packaging
Materials and components used in packaging operations to pack, box and protect goods or substances during transportation. 3.5 Packaging type packagetype
The shape and structure of packaged goods during transportation. Approved by the State Administration of Technical Supervision on July 9, 1996 188
Implementation on January 1, 1997
4 Coding structure and code representation
4.1 Coding structure
GB/T 16472-1996
4.1.1 The type of goods is represented by a one-digit code. 4.1.2 The type of packaging is represented by a two-digit code (the second digit is optional) or a two-digit letter code. 4.1.3 Packaging materials are represented by a one-digit code. 4.2 Code Representation
The representation, name and graphic of the codes for the types of goods, packaging types and packaging material types are given in the following appendices: 1) Appendix A (normative appendix) Basic code 1-digit code system, 2) Appendix B (normative appendix) 1-digit code representation and graphic symbols for the types of goods; 3) Appendix C (normative appendix) Representation and name of packaging type codes, graphic symbols; 4) Appendix D (normative appendix) Code representation of packaging type names used in international trade in alphabetical order of English names: 5) Appendix E (normative appendix) Code representation of packaging type names used in international trade in alphabetical order of codes. 5 Rules of Use
5.1 The codes for the types of goods, packaging types and packaging material codes may be used independently or in combination with each other. In particular, the packaging material code is suitable for use in combination with the packaging type code. 5.2 The code for the type of goods is only used to record the most external form of the goods presented during transportation and to indicate the most appropriate handling method. 5.3 The code for the packaging type is only used (for example, by the manufacturer) to record the direct packaging or container of the item that the purchaser usually requires in retail. This code is also used (e.g. by the exporter or consignor) to record the outermost packaging or container of the article required by the importer, wholesaler or retailer. 5.4 The packaging material code is used only to record the material used to make the packaging. 5.5 The cargo type and packaging type codes can be used in combination with other codes. For example: the mode of transport code. 5.6 The packaging type (first digit) and packaging name (2 letters) codes can be used in combination with the data element that specifies the unit of measurement to indicate the exact dimensions of the package. For example: "5KGM" means a container of 5 kilograms of goods, and "5LTR" means a container of 5 liters of liquid (see UN/ECE Recommendation No. 20).
5.7 The packaging type code can also use a two-digit code hierarchy. The first digit of the code indicates the shape of the packaged goods, and the second digit is optional, indicating the size of the packaged goods. 5.B The digital code system, whether 1 or 2 digits, is universal and can be suitable for all existing and possible types of goods, packaging and packaging materials.
5.9 In further flexible cases, alphabetic codes for packaging names can also be used. The 2-digit alphabetic code includes the packaging names currently in common use in English, French and Russian. In addition, new packaging names and codes can be added under the maintenance procedure. 5.10 Rules for extended application
In more complex cases, by extension, each code can be used for composite applications, in which several features of each code (numeric or alphabetic) can be nested. 5.10.1 The cargo type code can record two, three or more layers of cargo continuously from the outermost shape of the cargo. For example: the code for container trucks carrying coffee in bags on pallets can be: 6, 2, 4.9 (see Appendix A)
5.10.2 The packaging type code can record two, three or more layers of packaging continuously from the outermost shape of the packaging. For example, the code of a large box containing cartons of small bags or tea bags can be: 2,2,6 (1-digit code) (see Appendix B) or 24,22,61 (2-digit code) (see Appendix C) or BX,CT,SA (2-digit letter code) (see Appendix D, E) 189
GB/T16472-1996
5.10.3 Packaging material code Under the packaging type code, two, three or more layers of packaging materials in the same order can be recorded consecutively. 5.11 Choice between numeric and alphanumeric codes The user can choose between structured numeric and alphanumeric codes. Numeric codes are structured and therefore more suitable for automatic data processing (ADP) systems, while alphanumeric codes offer more permutations. In trade documents, the packaging type is mainly used to describe the identification of goods when they are transported and handled in transit and for border control. In this case, shorter alphanumeric codes are often preferred for ease of memory, especially when a memory link with the packaging type name is provided. 190
