Introduction to standards:

This standard specifies the scope of communication for programmable controllers. From the perspective of a programmable controller (PLC), it specifies how any device can communicate with the PLC as a server and how the PLC can communicate with any device. It specifically specifies the behavior of the PLC when the PLC provides services to other devices and when PLC applications can request services from other devices. It does not tend to specify how any devices communicate when the PLC is used as a router or gateway. The behavior of the PLC as a communication client and server is specified to be independent of the specific communication subsystem, but the communication function of the PLC may depend on the capabilities of the communication subsystem used.
