1 Scope
Powder coatings
GB/T21782.2—2008/IS08130-2:1992 Part 2: Determination of density by gas comparison pycnometer (arbitration method)
This part of GB/T21782 specifies the method for determining the density of powder coatings by gas comparison pycnometer. This method is applicable to all types of powder coatings and the test is simple, but compared with the methods commonly used to test density, this method requires complex instruments. The density of powder coatings is also measured by the liquid displacement pycnometer method described in GB/T21782.3-2008. The instrument of this method is relatively simple, but the liquid displacement pycnometer method is prone to erroneous results. In particular, there are two situations: one is that the displacement liquid used contacts the powder coating and causes the powder coating to swell; the other is that the displacement liquid cannot completely replace the air between the powder coating particles. The liquid displacement pycnometer method is slow and has low accuracy. It can only be used when it can obtain the same results as the gas comparison pycnometer method. 2 Normative references

3 Principle
When the sample is added to the measuring container, the volume of the weighed sample is calculated from the volume of the gas displaced in the measuring container. The pressure difference caused by the gas displacement is balanced to obtain the volume of the displaced gas. The density is then calculated from the mass and volume of the sample. 4 Materials
4.1 Air
If required, use nitrogen, stored in cylinders, industrial grade. Other gases may be used if the test product is not affected and the deviation of the method is noted in the H test report. 5 Instruments
5.1 Gas Comparative Density Instruments
For manual or automatic density determination, the following requirements shall be met. The basic design of a typical gas comparative density instrument using air as the medium is shown in Figure 1. It consists of two cylinders (A and B) with pistons of exactly equal size. A valve and a differential pressure gauge are connected between the cylinders. The sample contained in a 50 mL beaker is placed in cylinder B. The two pistons move with equal ranges, resulting in a pressure difference between cylinders A and B. The measuring piston in cylinder B is then moved to regain equal pressure. The resulting volume change is read from the scale as the sample volume. The measured cylinder gas exchange capacity shall be shown to be equal within a range of 0.5% (relative value). The intervals between the measured volumes indicated on the scale shall not be greater than 1% of the measured volume. The scale calibration shall be carried out by placing a reference standard of known volume with traceability in the instrument. 1
GB/T21782.2—2008/IS08130-2:1992 For routine calibration, only two reference standards of different volumes are required; however, for initial calibration, at least five reference standards of different volumes are required to ensure that the scale has a linear relationship over its entire scale range. Note: Several manufacturers can provide suitable gas comparison specific gravity instruments. Stopper

Take representative samples of the test product in accordance with the provisions of GB/T3186--2006. 7 Operating steps
Parallel measurements should be carried out at 23℃ + 1℃ and 50% ± 5% relative humidity. Adjust the instrument according to the manufacturer's instructions, taking into account the volume of the beaker, and check the instrument to ensure that there are no leaks. Weigh the empty beaker containing the sample to the nearest 1g. Fill the beaker with the test product, making sure that no powder sticks to the outer wall of the beaker. Weigh the beaker containing the sample to the nearest 1mg to obtain the mass of the sample (m). Place the beaker with the sample in the instrument and determine the volume of the sample according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Repeat the volume measurement to ensure consistency of the readings.And calculate the average of the two volumes (V). Note: If the gas is dry, a small change in density can be observed in the dry medium of the test part. If the difference between the two readings is greater than 2%, the result is discarded.
8 Expression of results
Use formula (1) to calculate the density of the powder coating at 23°C in g/mL: Pr=
Where:
Sample mass, in grams (g);
V---Sample volume, in milliliters (mL) If the difference between the two measurements is greater than 0.04 g/mL, re-measure as described in the operating steps. Calculate the average of the two valid measurements and report the result to the nearest 0.01 g/mL. 2
Precision
Precision data are not yet available.
Test report
The test report shall at least include the following contents: a)
All the detailed information necessary to identify the tested product; indicate the number of this part;
The model of gas comparative pycnometer and the gas used: test results (values of each parallel test and the average value); any deviation from the prescribed test method; test month and date.
