Introduction to standards:

This standard specifies entity authentication mechanisms using cryptographic verification functions. Two of these are for the authentication of a single entity (one-way authentication), and the remaining are for mutual authentication of two entities. The mechanisms specified in this standard use time-varying parameters such as time stamps, sequence numbers or random numbers to prevent valid authentication information from being accepted later.
