This standard applies to operations and scientific research related to tropical cyclones. Operational regulations related to tropical cyclones can be implemented with reference to this standard. 2 Terms and definitions
The following terms and definitions apply to this standard. 2.1
Tropical cyclonetropical cyclone
A general term for non-frontal vortices with organized convection and definite cyclonic circulation that are generated on tropical or subtropical ocean surfaces, including tropical depressions, tropical storms, severe tropical storms and typhoons. 3 Methods for naming tropical cyclones
3.1 The Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea use a set of special tropical cyclone naming tables. The Northwest Pacific and the South China Sea refer to the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea west of longitude 180 and north of the equator. 3.2 The names of tropical cyclones are selected from the names contributed by all members of the Typhoon Committee of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and relevant members of the World Meteorological Organization in the region.
4 Principles for naming tropical cyclones
4.1 Each name shall not exceed 9 English letters. 4.2 Easy to pronounce.
4.3 No negative meaning in the languages used by the members. 4.4 No difficulties will be caused to the members. 4.5 The name of a commercial organization is not allowed.
4.6 The selected name shall be approved by all members of the Typhoon Committee (one vote veto). 4.7 The Chinese translation shall be determined by the China Meteorological Administration and relevant institutions in Hong Kong and Macao through consultation. 5 Principles for the use of tropical cyclone names
5.1 The World Meteorological Organization Regional Specialized Meteorological Center (RSMC) - Tokyo Typhoon Center is responsible for numbering and naming tropical cyclones that reach tropical storm intensity or above according to the naming table determined by the Typhoon Committee. 5.2 The name of a tropical cyclone remains unchanged throughout its life cycle. For tropical cyclones that enter the northwest Pacific through the 180° longitude line, the original name of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center of the United States shall be maintained; for tropical cyclones that cross the 180° longitude line from west to east, the name of the Tokyo Typhoon Center shall be maintained.
5.3 The Central Meteorological Observatory shall issue tropical cyclone warnings and bulletins based on the names of tropical cyclones given by the Tokyo Typhoon Center. Meteorological stations at all levels shall issue tropical cyclone warnings and bulletins based on the names of tropical cyclones in the tropical cyclone warnings and bulletins issued by the Central Meteorological Observatory. 5.4 The names of tropical cyclones are used in domestic media, warnings and bulletins issued to the domestic aviation and maritime communities, and warnings and bulletins issued to the international community.
GB/T19202—2003
6 List of tropical cyclone names
6.1 The list contains 140 names, which come from the 14 members of the Typhoon Committee, namely: Cambodia, China, North Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Micronesia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, the United States and Vietnam. Each member contributes 10 names (see Appendix A).
6.2 Name tropical cyclones in the order of the list and use them in a cycle. The list contains five columns, each of which is divided into two groups. The names in each group are arranged in alphabetical order according to the names of each member. Each name has a certain meaning. For specific notes, see Appendix B. 6.3 For tropical cyclones that cause particularly severe disasters, members of the Typhoon Committee may apply to have the name of the tropical cyclone removed from the naming list as the permanent name of the tropical cyclone; they may also apply to have a name removed for other reasons. The list of tropical cyclone names will be reviewed at the annual Typhoon Committee session.
