ICS.25.220.01 National Standard of the People's Republic of China GB/T12334—2001 idt ISO 2064:1996 Metallic and other inorganic coatings-Definitions and conventions concerning the measurement of thickness Promulgated on 17 December 2001 General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China Implementation on 1 June 2002 GB/T12334—2001 This standard is equivalent to ISO2064:1996 "Metallic and other inorganic coatings-Definitions and general rules concerning the measurement of thickness". It revises GB/T12334-1990 "Metallic and other inorganic coatings-Definitions and general rules concerning the measurement of thickness". This standard was proposed by the China Machinery Industry Federation. This standard is under the jurisdiction of the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Metallic and Non-metallic Coatings. The responsible drafting unit for this standard is Wuhan Institute of Material Protection. The main drafters of this standard are He Shaoxin, Qin Wei and Jia Jianxin. This standard was first published on April 27, 1990. GB/T12334—2001 ISO Foreword The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a worldwide alliance of national standard bodies (ISO member bodies) of various countries. The formulation and revision of international standards are usually carried out through ISO's technical committees. Member groups interested in the topics determined by the technical committees have the right to express their opinions to the committees. Official and non-official organizations that have liaison with ISO may also participate in this work. ISO works closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) in all aspects of electrotechnical standardization. The draft international standards adopted by the committee shall be circulated to the member bodies for voting, and at least 75% of the member bodies shall vote for them when they are published as international standards. International Standard ISO 2064 was prepared by Technical Committee SC2\Coordination of Inspection Methods and Test Methods\ of Technical Committee ISO/TC 107 "Metallic and other inorganic coatings". The third edition of this international standard cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 2064:1980) and is a technical revision of the second edition. 0 Introduction National Standard of the People's Republic of China Metallic and other inorganic coatings Metallic and other inorganic coatings-Definitions and conventions concerningthe measurement of thicknessGB/T12334—2001 idtISo2064:1996 Replaces GB/T12334—1990 The coating should have a thickness not less than a certain value (in a few cases, it is required not to be greater than a certain value), which is an important requirement in most coating standards. This standard specifies the method for measuring the thickness of specific coatings. The main purpose of this standard is to define the meaning of the term "minimum thickness" used in technical standards for metals and related metal coatings. The minimum thickness in this standard should be the thickness of the coating on a small local area. Using certain methods, such as microscopy (GB/T6462), it is possible to measure obvious changes in the thickness of the coating on a very small area (such as pits, crack areas), although the minimum thickness of such a very small area does not reach the specified minimum thickness value. Using other measurement methods [for example, coulometric method (GB/T4955) or other non-destructive measurement methods3, it is impossible to measure local changes in the thickness of a small area. Therefore, the only possible explanation for the minimum thickness is the comparable local thickness obtained by a feasible test method on a small measurable area. This area cannot be too small, otherwise it is not suitable for some standard test methods. This small area is called a "reference surface". And this reference surface should be suitable for multiple separate measurements by the test method used. In order to obtain consistent results, especially when non-destructive testing is used, the average value measured on the reference surface should be used as the local thickness. In practice, it is generally permissible to measure the thickness of the coating on any area of the main surface in order to find the minimum thickness of the test piece. The test area should generally be selected where the coating is expected to be the thinnest on the surface of the test piece. Therefore, the definition of the minimum thickness is the minimum value of the local thickness obtained by the test method adopted (see Chapter 3). Some coatings, such as hot-dip galvanizing and thermal spraying metal coatings, have coating technical standards that require compliance with minimum local thickness or average thickness, or both. These requirements may be different from the parameters defined in this standard and should be referred to the technical specifications of the relevant products. 1 Scope This standard specifies the terms related to the measurement of the thickness of metal and other non-organic coatings on any substrate and specifies some general rules to be followed in measuring the minimum thickness of the coating. This standard is applicable to the measurement of the thickness of metal and other non-organic coatings on any substrate. 2 Referenced standards The provisions contained in the following standards constitute the provisions of this standard by reference in this standard. The versions shown are valid at the time of publication of this standard. All standards are subject to revision. Parties using this standard should explore the possibility of using the latest versions of the following standards. GB/T4955—1997 Metallic coatings Coulometric method for coating thickness by anodic dissolution (idt ISO2177:1985) GB/T6462—1986 Microscopic measurement of cross-sectional thickness of metallic and oxide coatings (eqv ISO1463:1982) Approved by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine of the People's Republic of China on December 17, 2001 and implemented on June 1, 2002 3 Definitions This standard adopts the following definitions. GB/T12334—2001bZxz.net 3.1 Significant surface The surface of a workpiece that has been coated or is to be coated, on which the coating is critical to its performance and/or appearance; the coating on this surface must meet all specified requirements. 3.2 Measuring area The main surface area for a single measurement. The following are the measurement surfaces defined by various measurement methods: a) The measurement surface of the analytical method is the area where the covering layer is removed; b) The measurement surface of the anodic dissolution method is the area surrounded by the closed ring of the electrolytic cell; c) The measurement surface of the microscope method is the field of view at a specified magnification (see GB/T6462); d) The measurement surface of the non-destructive method is the area in contact with the probe or the area that affects the reading (see introduction); 3.3 Reference area referencearea The area where a specified number of single measurements are required. 3.4 Local thickness localthickness The average value of the specified number of thickness measurements made within the reference surface (see also introduction). 3.5 Minimum local thickness minimumlocalthicknessThe minimum value of the local thickness measured on the main surface of a single workpiece (see also introduction). 3.6 Maximum local thickness maximumlocalthicknessThe maximum value of the local thickness measured on the main surface of a single workpiece. 3.7 Average thickness averagethickness The value obtained by analytical methods (see 5.1) or by the average value obtained by a specified number of local thickness measurements evenly distributed over the major surface (see 5.2 and the introduction). NOTE The product specification for a large number of coated parts may require the measurement of the average thickness of the covering layer of a slot of product. In this case, the standard deviation must be known so that the proportion of the batch below the average thickness value can be estimated. 4 Measurement of local thickness Average thickness measurements are usually made on a number of small parts with a limited total surface area. 4.1 Test pieces with a major surface less than 1 cm The normal reference surface for measuring local thickness should be the number of single measurements made on this reference surface over the entire major surface of the test piece, which should be agreed upon by the supplier and the purchaser. In special cases, some smaller reference surfaces may be taken, but the supplier and the purchaser should agree on the size, number and location of the reference surfaces. 4.2 The local thickness of the test piece with a main surface larger than 1 cm should be measured within a reference plane of approximately 1 cm (a square with a side length of 1 cm should be used when possible). A maximum of 5 scattered measuring points can be taken within this reference plane (the specific number depends on the measurement method used). The actual number of measurements should be agreed upon by the supplier and the buyer. 4.3 Microscope method When measuring using the microscope method specified in GB/T6462, at least 5 scattered points should be measured along the specified microscopic section length 1\. 1) For the electrolytic layer, this length should be set at 5mm, but for a coating with uniform thickness, such as anodized film, this length can be 20mm. 2 5 Measurement of average thickness 5.1 Analytical method GB/T12334—2001 When measuring the average thickness using the mass loss method, the selected measuring surface should be large enough to measure the mass loss accurately enough by weighing. If the main surface of the coated part is smaller than the minimum required measuring area, several test pieces should be selected to provide the measuring area required for one measurement. And the measurement result should be regarded as the average thickness. If the area of the main surface of the coated part is only slightly larger than the minimum required measuring area, one measurement on the part should be regarded as the average thickness of the part. At least two test pieces should be measured to prove the measurement accuracy. If the main surface of the coated part is significantly larger than the minimum required measurement area, the specified number of repeated measurements should be distributed over the main surface and the measurement results should be recorded separately. 5.2 Other methods If the main surface of the coated part is only slightly larger than the reference surface for measuring local thickness (see Chapter 4), the local thickness value should be taken as the average thickness If the main surface of the coated part is significantly larger than the reference surface for measuring local thickness (see Chapter 4), the average thickness should be taken as the average of 3 to 5 local thickness measurements scattered over the main surface.
