1 Scope
This part of GB/T 16900 specifies methods for testing the object relevance of graphical symbols that are intended to convey information to users who are familiar with the meaning (objects) of the graphical symbols. Objects may be special objects, so it is difficult for the public to become familiar with them without cognitive training.
GB/T 16900.4 is applicable to testing the object relevance of graphical symbols.

GB/T16900 is one of the national standards in the series of "Rules for the Representation of Graphic Symbols". The structure and name of this series of national standards are as follows: GB/T16900 "Rules for the Representation of Graphical Symbols" is divided into the following 4 parts: a)
-Part 1: General principles;
-Part 2: Comprehension test method;
-Part 3: Perceptual test method;
Part 4: Object relevance test method. GB/T16901 "Rules for the Representation of Graphical Symbols for Technical Documents" is divided into the following parts: b)
Part 1: Basic rules.

This part was drafted in accordance with the rules given in GB/T1.1-2009. This part was revised and adopted ISO9186-3:2014 "Graphic symbol test method Part 3: Object relevance
Test method" using the redrafting method.
Compared with ISO9186-3:2014, this part has the following structural changes: - The entire text changes the suspension paragraph to an untitled bar, including Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, and Chapter 7. The technical differences between this part and ISO9186-3:2014 and their reasons are as follows: - Regarding normative references, this part has made technically different adjustments to adapt to my country's technical conditions. The adjustments are concentrated in Chapter 2 "Normative References". The specific adjustments are as follows: · Replace ISO17724 with GB/T15565 (see Chapter 3); · Replace ISO9241-400 with GB/T18978.400, which is equivalent to the international standard (see 7.2.7); . Replace the obsolete ISO9241-12 with ISO9241-125 (see 7.2.7). - Delete the second paragraph in the "Introduction".
- Move the second paragraph in the "Scope" that does not meet the requirements of GB/T1.1-2009 to the introduction. - Delete the specific items in the terminology (the terms have been defined in GB/T15565). 1. As my country has not yet carried out the work of proposing standardization of graphic symbols, the requirements related to the proposal of standardization of graphic symbols in ISO9186-3:2014 are deleted or modified, such as deleting 5.1 and its note, modifying "proposer" in 5.2, and paragraph 1 in 7.3. The education level has been described according to the words used in my country, so the relevant description in paragraph 4 of 7.2 is deleted. - The test requirements for different countries in ISO9186-3:2014 are changed to test requirements for different regions, such as Chapter 5, 7.3, and 7.7.

Because non-verbal forms are increasingly used as a means of expressing information in buildings and other places and for special objects, the continuous growth of international trade also requires that the graphic symbols used can be understood, so this part of GB/T16900 is formulated. The purpose of compiling this part is to formulate graphic symbols that can be correctly understood by users without supplementary text (i.e. explanatory text). If the graphic symbols formulated cannot meet this requirement, the graphic symbols may need to be used together with supplementary text (the supplementary text explains the meaning of the graphic symbols in the language of potential users). This part is intended for use by all technical committees responsible for formulating special graphic symbols within the industry, with the aim of ensuring that graphic symbols correspond to objects. 4.1 Graphic symbols for special objects are used to represent facilities, controls, displays, concepts or things. There are many different objects (graphic symbols) in the working environment and on equipment operated by professional users. 4.2 The comprehension test method described in GB/T16900.2 (i.e., let the subject look at a graphic symbol and then ask the subject to say what the graphic symbol means) is not suitable for testing graphic symbols representing special objects that the subject is not familiar with. The reason is that the subject may answer "don't know" because he does not understand the object, but not because the graphic symbol is poorly designed. Therefore, a different method should be used to test graphic symbols representing special objects, which requires cognitive training at the initial stage, that is, let the subject become familiar with the special object and then indicate familiarity with the special object before testing the graphic symbol.
4.3 When the subjects are familiar with the special objects, the graphic symbol to be tested can be shown to the subjects, and a group of familiar objects can be provided at the same time. They can be asked which object (if any) the graphic symbol to be tested represents, i.e. the graphic symbol object relevance test.
